What we want to see within ten years
Goal: Our community lives healthy lifestyles and has access to quality healthcare, sporting, recreation and leisure activities
Goals are how the Shire has interpreted and grouped the things that the community wants everyone to work together to improve over the next ten years
Goal Outcomes:
- Access to healthcare👩🏾⚕️ - Improve access to quality health and community services.
- Access to sport and recreation facilities and services🥅🏉 - Sport and recreation facilities and services are accessible and well maintained
- Access to community groups and clubs👩👩👧👧 - Access to strong supportive community groups and clubs
Background:
Health is one of the most valuable aspects of a person’s life. It enables active participation in social life and in the labour market. Health is also influenced by a good work-life balance as well as high environmental quality.
People living in regional and remote areas have poorer health outcomes than people living in metropolitan areas. Data shows that people living in rural and remote areas have higher rates of hospitalisations, deaths, injury and also have poorer access to, and use of, primary health care services, than people living in major cities.
Local governments provide a variety services that support the communities health. These include parks, playgrounds and sporting facilities and services. Local governments also play an important role in environmental health, preventing and dealing with any potential risk which comes from the physical environment and could prove harmful to the public.
Community comments outside of direct access to health care services link closely with the Act, Commit, Belong campaign. Act Belong Commit is state-wide mental health promotion campaign by Mentally Healthy WA to encourage people to act to improve and protect their mental health and wellbeing. The Shire can support the community to act, commit and belong through the provision of sport and recreational facilities and supporting local community groups and clubs.

Analysis:
Sport Australia’s annual participation data collection and analysis highlights a number of key trends across Australia. The data has helped the Shire identify trends in sport and recreation provision and can help inform future sport and recreation infrastructure provision within the Shire. key points of the data are:
Recreational spaces are critical in living healthy lifestyles, they allow all people, regardless of age or ability, to experience creative play, social interaction and physical activity. Play is particularly important to children in the development of their physical, social, mental, emotional and creative skills. Recreational spaces, particularly Play spaces such as playgrounds provide an opportunity for children to engage with other children, be active and learn, extend and adapt their skills. It is a fundamental and integral part of healthy development, providing valuable opportunities for children to develop a range of physical, cognitive and social skills which are vital to a child’s development.
Sport Australia’s annual participation data collection and analysis highlights a number of key trends across Australia. The data has helped the Shire identify trends in sport and recreation provision and can help inform future sport and recreation infrastructure provision within the Shire. key points of the data are:
- Top activities for participation in physical activity were recreational walking (43.4%), fitness and gym activities (33.9%), jogging and running 15.5%), swimming (15%), cycling (11.5%), bushwalking (5.7%), football (5.5%), golf (4.8%), yoga (4.8%) and tennis (4.5%).
- Women are more likely to participate in sport or physical activity for physical and mental health reasons, and to lose or maintain weight, than men.
- Men are more motivated by fun / enjoyment and for social reasons than women.
- For adults, up to middle-age, time pressure is by far the main barrier to participating in sport or physical activity. Poor health or injury then also becomes a main factor.
- Sport clubs are the primary avenue for children to be active, except for children aged 0 – 4, who are more likely to be active through other organisations.
- Sport clubs are not necessarily the main choice for participation in sport or physical activity in Australia for adults aged 18 years and over. Across Australia, the latest 2019 data indicated that 58% of the adult population participate through an organisation or venue and 22% of the population participate through a sports club or association.
- AusPlay data indicates that 36% of girls in Australia have stopped playing sport by the age of 18, primarily due to peer pressure and body image issues.
- Adventure and alternative sports are becoming increasingly popular particularly with younger Australians

More about 2.3 Access to community groups and clubs 👩👩👧👧
Analysis:
Volunteer-led community groups and clubs provide valuable support and services to people in our communities.
community groups can flex to the needs of the community, provide a holistic service that meets the multiple-needs of people, build trusting relationships, connect to ‘hidden’ groups, harness first-hand experience leading to valuable expertise, provide low-cost services and attract people that are highly committed to their cause. Although many groups are well established, some pop-up in response to a need and disband when they have done their job. Others grow and shrink depending on demand and resource. This results in an agile sector that responds to its environment.
Many community needs or wants are met by volunteer-led community groups and clubs that are not financially viable for the public or private sector to provide. Many of these are not only ‘nice to have’ but also essential ‘must have’ services and support. Many people in the community are struggling with cost of living pressure and rely on services offered by community groups. Services such as the Community Op-Shop helping our community access affordable clothing and household items, or Community Kitchen feeding those unable to cook. Increased demand for these services provided by groups such as Jungarri House, Neighbourhood House and Wunan is an indication of the valuable role they play in community.
Community groups and clubs in the Shire are responsible for putting on the majority community events including sport in Kununurra and Wyndham including the Ord Valley Muster. Strong community groups and clubs are best placed to utilise make the most of community assets, creating arts projects and running sports clubs.
Supporting these groups and volunteers can help reduce demand for Shire resources helping them stretch further.
Belonging is the need for a positive connection with others. A sense of belonging is about participating in quality, meaningful and satisfying connections. Volunteer-led community groups and clubs provide valuable support and services to people in our communities.
