What we want to see within ten years
Goal 4: Education and training opportunities for everyone
Goals are how the Shire has interpreted and grouped the things that the community wants everyone to work together to improve over the next ten years
Goal Outcomes:
- Childcare and preschool programs👶🏿 - Increase participation in early childhood educational development including quality childcare
- Inclusive education pathways📜 - Residents can access a broad range of educational opportunities, including alternative education pathways
Background:
Education opens opportunities for development and helps people to better cope with social and economic changes. Prospects on the labour market and the possibilities for professional fulfilment and advancement are to a large extent determined by education.
Community want to see education and training opportunities so they can live and work in the Shire.
In 2021, people aged 20–64 living in rural and remote areas were less likely than those in Major cities to have completed Year 12 or a non-school qualification.
Similarly, a smaller proportion of people aged 20–64 living in the regions had completed a bachelor’s degree or above, compared with those in Major cities (ABS 2021e). Young people from regional areas may be more likely to move to metropolitan areas to study and subsequently stay after completing their studies (Mackey 2019).

Analysis:
Research shows that children who participate in quality preschool programs are more likely to arrive at school equipped with the social, cognitive and emotional skills they need to help them to continue learning. These benefits extend well beyond primary school. Higher levels of educational success, employment and social skills have all been linked to moderate levels of participation in quality early childhood education.

More about 4.2 Inclusive education pathways βπ
Analysis:
A ‘traditional pathway’ usually refers to study at an official or formal educational institution (public or private), with students steadily climbing the education ladder from pre-school to primary to secondary, and potentially beyond. A traditional pathway represents a linear progression through the education system.
In the most general sense, alternative or non-traditional pathways represent non-linear approaches through the education and training system.
