What we want to see within ten years
Goal 7: Creating access and turning our remoteness into a positive experience
Goals are how the Shire has interpreted and grouped the things that the community wants everyone to work together to improve over the next ten years
Goal Outcomes:
- Transport connections 🚗✈️ - People and goods are able to move freely in and out of the East Kimberley
- Communications connections 📞🌐 - Everyone in the Shire has access to high-speed, resilient and secure internet access
background:
while the spectacular natural environment and relaxed lifestyle are some of the main attractions of living here, the remoteness and sparse population of the East Kimberley causes a host of socio-economic challenges, including market isolation, inadequate access to goods and services, lower wages, unemployment or out-migration, high costs of travel and higher costs of living. the community what to see greater connectivity, creating access and turning our remoteness into a positive experience.
A lack of sufficient demand often deters private-sector providers from offering connections. Where commercial transport struggles to provide these, governments often step in. Support takes the form of either public service provision or subsidies.

Analysis:
Most remote communities face higher costs of travel and more complex transportation links. The wet season can often have seasonal impacts on transport links cutting off communities for extended periods.
Air connectivity
Air connectivity is an important enabler in achieving economic and social benefits. It facilitates tourism, trade, and connectivity, generates economic growth, provides jobs, improves living standards, alleviates poverty, provides a lifeline for remote communities and enables a rapid response when disasters occur. Attracting new routes in and out of the Shire through Shire Airports increases connectivity.
Develop aviation opportunities at the Wyndham Airport and East Kimberley Regional Airport.

More about 7.2 Communications connections ππ
Almost all businesses need high-speed, resilient and secure internet access, be it for banking or selling products and services online. Where communications technology fails to keep up with global advancement businesses struggle to compete.
Remote communities are supported by an array of communications modes of varying capacity and effectiveness. With less than a third of remote Aboriginal communities connected by fibre optic cable, there is heavy reliance on satellite and microwave backhaul solutions. 3G or 4G mobile services have been installed in most large remote communities (typically over about 250-300 people) across Australia, primarily by Telstra through infrastructure co-investment via a range of Federal and state government programs. The NBN Sky Muster satellites have been a game changer in terms of speed, data limits, reliability and affordable services. Most domestic users have migrated to the Sky Muster services.
