Connecting our cultures🎭

Under development

What we want to see within ten years

Goal 8: Celebrating and connecting our rich community, culture and heritage

Goals are how the Shire has interpreted and grouped the things that the community wants everyone to work together to improve over the next ten years
Goal Outcomes:
  1. Community participation ❤️ - Active and resilient community groups and volunteers
  2. Culture and art 💀 - Celebrate the East Kimberley’s art, culture and heritage
Background:
An important way in which our communities stay connected is through our community groups and clubs.  These groups bring residents together and provide group members with opportunities to give and receive social support and create a sense of belonging.  It is important that these groups remain active and resilient to provide opportunities for the wider community to participate and maintain a close-knit community.

Culture can mean different things to different people. It is a way of life, encapsulating the shared values, attitudes and beliefs of the community which have been influenced by historical, social, environmental and economic experiences.  The Shire is culturally diverse with people from many backgrounds and cultures.  Around a third of the Shire’s population identifies as Aboriginal and almost another third of residents were born overseas.  It is important to maintain an understanding of each others cultures and that we celebrate the community’s collective identity as well as an opportunity for self-expression..

More about 8.1 Increasing community participation ❤️
Background:
Community groups, such as charities, sports clubs, and arts and hobby groups, bring residents together and provide group members with opportunities to give and receive social support and create a sense of belonging. Community and individual resilience tends to be greater where there is higher levels of community involvement.

To celebrate the community’s collective identity as well as the opportunity for self-expression

The lifeblood of any community group is its people. Greater support with training and up-skilling committee members are vital to ensuring the longevity and financial sustainability of our community groups.
Actions:
  • Identify activities to increase and support volunteering in the community.
More about 8.2 Visible culture and heritage 💀
Background:

Increasing understanding of local cultures

Men’s business and women’s business:
In Aboriginal culture, there are clear-cut divisions between men’s and women’s roles in society. Women’s business includes all aspects of reproduction: menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, contraception, abortion and female ceremonial business. Men’s business involves hunting, conflicts, the land, male anatomy and male ceremonial business.

Actions:
  • Develop an art and culture plan or strategy
